Global Player

We are the European Space Agency.

Our mission is the peaceful exploration and use of space for the benefit of everyone. We watch over Earth, develop and launch inspiring and unique space projects, train astronauts and push the boundaries of science and technology, seeking answers to the big questions about the Universe. We are a family of scientists, engineers and business professionals from all over Europe working together in a diverse and multinational environment.

At ESA, we are always on the lookout for experts from engineering, science, IT, natural/social science, business and administration services (law, finance, communications, human resources, facility management) to join our teams and work on inspiring missions at the heart of European space activities! ESA offers attractive employment conditions and promotes a multicultural, supportive, inclusive and family-friendly working environment.

Since its creation in 1975, ESA has been a place of integration for Europe and its people, and has been strengthened by the wealth and diversity of the cultures they represent. Bringing together differing perspectives is one of our greatest assets and a key factor driving our achievements. For this purpose, we welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age or disability.

Member States

ESA is an international organisation with 22 Member States. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. ESA's 22 Member States areAustria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Cooperations

Canada takes part in some projects under a cooperation agreement. Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia and Lithuania are Associate Members. Four other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates a large number of projects. These are carried out partly under its own auspices and partly in cooperation with other space agencies. Some of the projects are presented below:

Vega Rocket

Small, versatile, and efficient — the Vega launch system is Europe’s way of launching light satellites to multiple orbits in a single launch. It successfully completed its first flight on February 13, 2012. It is the smallest European launch vehicle to date and can carry up to 2.5 tons into low-Earth orbit.

Ariane Rocket

Europe's Ariane rocket first launched in 1979 from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. Ariane 5 is today the cornerstone of Europe’s independent access to space. It is the most powerful European launcher and enables heavy payloads to be carried into Earth orbit. Currently in development, Ariane 6 will soon continue this adventure.

Space Rider

Space Rider is an uncrewed robotic laboratory about the size of two minivans. After launch on Vega-C it will stay in low orbit for about two months. Experiments inside its cargo bay will allow technology demonstration and benefit research in pharmaceutics, biomedicine, biology and physical science. At the end of its mission, Space Rider will return to Earth with its payloads and land on a runway to be unloaded and refurbished for another flight.

Biomass

ESA's forest mission. Carrying a novel P-band synthetic aperture radar, the Biomass mission is designed to deliver crucial information about the state of our forests and how they are changing, and to further our knowledge of the role forests play in the carbon cycle.

Webb telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) is the next great space science observatory following Hubble, designed to answer outstanding questions about the Universe and to make breakthrough discoveries in all fields of astronomy. Webb will see farther into our origins: from the formation of stars and planets, to the birth of the first galaxies in the early Universe. Webb is an international partnership between NASA, ESA and CSA. The telescope will launch on an Ariane 5 from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.

At ESA, we recruit professionals and experts in engineering, science, IT, finance, law, HR, communication and facility management and are always on the lookout for new colleagues to support our space missions.

Entry-level programmes at ESA:

There are six different programmes open to students and recent graduates who are national of one of the ESA Member States or Cooperating States:

  • Internships are available while you are still studying.
  • The Young Graduate Trainee Programme is for students who are about to graduate from a Master’s level course, or for those who have recently graduated.
  • National Trainee Programmes are similar to the Young Graduate Trainee programme and are run by several national governments, also targeting those who are either about to graduate, or have recently graduated, with a Master’s degree.
  • The Junior Professional Programme is open to graduates of a Master's level degree programme with two to three years of professional experience.
  • Researchers can apply for ESA to co-fund space-related PhD and post-doc research activities.
  • Post docs can apply to the Research Fellowship Programme.

Professionals:

Do you have a Masters or PhD in a relevant domain? Are you enthusiastic, curious and a team player and ready to take up a new challenge in an international environment? Then apply now and contribute to ESA missions.

Unsere Kultur

What is it like to work at ESA and what can you expect as a new staff member once arriving on site? When you join ESA, you join an international and friendly environment which offer a range of benefits and services provided on site. These may vary from establishment to establishment.

Accepting a job at ESA means not only adjusting to a new work environment but in some cases, also adjusting to a new country, a new culture and a new language. ESA offers a number of services to help staff settle into their new environment more easily.
