For clearcoat in EC/O NA, the cost and capability of this layer is critical to paint system performance. As group leader for this layer, your role in controlling cost, performance, and application characteristics will have a significant impact on product margin and customer satisfaction.

Reporting to the North America (NA) OEM Technical Manager, this regional role provides an opportunity to make a significant difference to the success of the Coatings business. In this role, you will be responsible for directly managing the assigned technical team based in Southfield, Michigan. You will be required to provide technical direction for the development of new automotive coatings and assign and prioritize work within the team. You will be responsible for ensuring that project timelines are developed and communicated to all key stakeholders.

The individual will also serve as the primary technical contact with the Regional Key Account and Product Management teams and will work collaboratively to prioritize the technical work for the team. The incumbent will be responsible for the training and development of their team and ensure that the proper safety practices are followed. The individual will also be responsible for ensuring that lessons learned, and the best practices are documented properly (i.e. Design Matrix, DFMEA, formulation guidelines). The successful candidate must have high level of entrepreneurial drive with ability to think technically, strategically, and analytically while navigating through all functions, levels, regions within BASF and at the customer.

  • Managing and leading a team of associates in the development of new clearcoats and service of existing products for all North America OEM’s
  • Collaborating with global customization technical teams for introduction of new technologies in the North America market
  • Collaborating with Regional Key Accounts and Field service teams to address technical requests / trouble shooting projects related to new or existing products, by managing, initiating, and coordinating projects together with production sites.
  • Driving and supporting the achievement of profitable growth through continuous improvement and executing of cost saving measures of existing products and raw materials.
  • Establishing individual development plans for all employees. Routinely follow up with employees to ensure progress on plans

If you...

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a science major and have 10 years of experience in color or paint or a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a non-chemical science with at least 5 years of experience in the field of automotive coatings with strong knowledge in formulations and chemistry
  • Have experience in the development of coating systems for automotive applications
  • Previous expertise leading a team
  • Possess broad knowledge of coating chemistries and have worked with multiple paint systems and layers
  • Have experience interacting with external customers
  • Thrive in a dynamic environment and can effectively manage changing priorities
  • Bring people and project management experience
